In the first news release of 2012, California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection discussed the increase of wildfires they experienced during the current winter season. Because of the swell in fire occurrences throughout the state, the organization has decided to increase the number of fighters available by combining their 4,700 permanent employees and the CAL FIRE inmate fire crews.

What caused this increase in fire activity? According to the Department of Water Resources the precipitation across California is only at 19 percent of the normal average, making this winter one of the driest in the history of the Golden State. The dry conditions combined with wind and low humidity has made California a breeding ground for wildfires.
