When you contact a California insurance agent about a homeowners’ policy, he or she will probably ask you a variety of questions to ensure you get the coverage you need. These questions may range from the type of home you have to the number of people in your household, and whether or not you have a dog. Why would insurers be interested in whether or not you have a dog? From bites to jumping up on visitors, canines are no strangers to causing injuries. Whether intentional or not, a dog-related accident involving a visitor could leave your family liable for damages. Here are some tips for avoiding such an event.

-       Choose a breed that has a reputation for friendliness;

-       Arrange training for your new puppy as soon as it is old enough. Good training will help ensure that you can control your dog when it is fully grown, making it less likely to jump on visitors, and more likely to return to you when called.

-       When hosting a party or other gathering, separate the dog from your guests. There are two good reasons for doing so; firstly, not everyone likes dogs, and secondly, it’s not uncommon for small children to provoke dogs by pulling tails or ears, or poking with a stick.

Have you recently purchased a dog and are concerned about how it may affect your insurance coverage? Contact our California insurance agent to find out more about these issues.
