Many a California insurance agent will tell you that one of the keys to keeping costs low during a disaster is preparing ahead of time. While some calamities often provide residents with ample time to get ready, others can occur without warning. To help the older citizens of the United States achieve the goal of emergency preparedness, the Administration on Aging has prepared a five-step plan. These recommendations are summarized below:

  • The first action you should take is to create a family communication plan. Choose a single member of the family to be responsible for checking everyone after a disaster.
  • A portable radio or cell phone can help ensure you stay informed about the emergency situation.
  • You and your loved ones should agree on a meeting place to gather after the disaster occurs.
  • Creating a home emergency kit is vital to taking care of yourself when resources are limited or unavailable. Included in these kits should be food, water, and medications as well as essential equipment like flashlights and first aid items.
  • You should also pack a smaller kit that you can carry with you in case your home becomes unsafe. Along with the things listed above, include copies of important documents and $50 in cash.

While the above steps were created with the elderly in mind, they can be useful to all generations. Once you are prepared for a disaster, getting your home ready should be considered vital. A California insurance agent with our agency may be able to help you with that by checking to ensure you are adequately protected by insurance.
